Milkhouse Brewery at Stillpoint Farm Brewers Association of Maryland

From Frogtown to Torrance, inventive artisans across town have started tinkering and experimenting with the magical combination of water, malt, hops and yeast to bring a fresh new taste to the beer scene. Beachwood Blendery has been pushing boundaries in Southern California craft beer for years, thanks to its prodigious barrel-aging program and funky, often fruity finished styles. This is the spot to take craft beer nerds after a day at the beach — or, really, anyone who enjoys a little sour, tartness, and funk in their brews. Housed in the historic Firestone tire station on La Brea, All Season Brewing is the expansive, all-purpose informal Mid-Wilshire bar that the city has been waiting for. A menu of draft wines and classic cocktails, delicious snacks from Chicas Tacos, arcade games and Skee-Ball round out a night at the expansive open-air brewery, which also has an excellent weekday specials. When you really want to drink to the Dodgers but don’t want to spend $18 on a subpar stadium beer, this Chinatown taproom is where you go.

This series is brewed with seasonally available grains and hops from our local producers to truly showcase Maryland agriculture. One of L.A.'s first breweries, the Philadelphia Brew House, opened in 1874 near the present-day site of Union Station. At first, the brewery's walls surrounded the expansive tree, but in the 1890s good business spelled a bad fate for El Aliso, which was felled and sold for lumber to make room for an expanded brewery facility. Benny Boy just lends itself well for inviting a bunch of friends or family out for a night.

Brouwerij West

Tucked away on an industrial block in a part of the San Fernando Valley not exactly known for beer, Cellador provides an elegant space perfect for drinking. And Cellador is more than happy to school you on sours if you’re down for the lesson. You can even fill your backpack full of homework (i.e. the excellent bottle selection by the register). While visiting the taproom, just keep in mind that at the time of publication Monkish currently requires proof of vaccination or masks for those not vaccinated while indoors. There’s a limited amount of seating in the backroom and virtually none in the main pour room, but there’s a sweet monk mural to snap a photo with, a handful of wood barrels as tables, and very frequently a food truck outside.

While that’s still not as many as San Diego, it is plenty to choose from, leaving craft beer drinkers here with one less thing to defend (don’t get us started on the whole comparing L.A. to New York City). Don’t be fooled by the name, this brewery has since expanded from its cute and cozy location inside of Hermosillo bar in Highland Park to an impressive warehouse in Chinatown. We love Highland Park Brewery because they aren’t afraid to get a little funky (that’s what fermentation is all about, right?) with their recipes. For coconut lovers, the bold and nutty Coconut Tree Imperial Stout is a must, giving off a subtle taste of crème brûlée on the finish. If you’re hankering for something lighter, the Hermosillo Lager is crispier than crisp and will hop right off your tongue. Plus, the tasting room itself is an absolute blast — just try to avoid the weekend crowds by getting their a bit earlier.

Additional tokens can be purchased on site.Under Age 13 is FREETHIS IS A RAIN OR SHINE EVENT. Milkfarm is an Artisan Cheese Shop in Eagle Rock (Los Angeles), California. Progress Brewing is a big deal for El Monte, the bedroom community east of Downtown Los Angeles. Crisp classics and unique newcomers (try the Sandia Loca, a blonde ale with watermelon and chamoy) play nicely here. (Although former Hop Culture Managing Editor John Paradiso had the time of his life at Shacksbury Cider’s Harvest Camp).

A legal dispute between Zobelein and his new partners ensued, and in 1907 Zobelein split with the Maier brothers and purchased the ten-year old Los Angeles Brewing Company, located on the L.A. Zobelein crafted a line of beers, ranging from a pale lager to a stronger, darker bock, and sold them under his new Eastside brand. This Lincoln Heights spot is frequently crowded thanks to its ample indoor-outdoor hangout space, quality brews (and cider), ongoing events and parties, and wide range of pop-up food nights. The Arts District’s 17,000-square-foot playland of a brewery has it all with over 30 beers on tap, a full bar, dartboards, skee ball, cornhole sets, and a ping pong table. Say less, get there, and order burgers, sandwiches, salads, or quesadillas.

HiDef Brewing

In 2015, Sherwin Antonio and Kirk Nishikawa turned a drunk promise from high school into Glendale’s first microbrewery. Since then, they've conceived a host of explosively creative concoctions to pay homage to both 19th century California lager and their respective Filipino and Japanese roots. The Ube Wan IPA is brewed with strong ube and coconut flavors, while the Yoi Yoi, a Japanese rice lager, carries hints of Japanese "Ume" Plums and premium Koshihikari Sushi Rice. And be sure to try the Jewel City Common, a malty amber that won first place in the 2019 California Commercial Beer Competition. As far as brewery-owned gastropubs go, Ballast Point runs some of the best, and their oceanside Long Beach location is no exception. The 30-plus beers on draft should keep you busy, but they never distract from the sweeping views of Alamitos Bay.

October 2023 Taproom Highlights

If you do visit, you’ll find yourself in a gorgeous garden space with soft sand gulfs, wooden benches, and firepits. And the beers churning out of this Highland Park spot have put it on the map with Southern California heavyweights such as Pizza Port, Homage, and Mumford. So buckle up, and pack enough layers to get you from the beach through those California cool nights—these are the seven best breweries in the Los Angeles region.

With both cider and beer on tap, everyone can drink their favorites and the warm, charming space means you never really want to leave. So when we hear about a taproom that brews both beer and cider, well, our ears perk up. The Los Angeles brewery has two locations and we’d highly recommend checking out both if time permits. But, if you must choose, we’d send you to the blendery where all sorts of funky wonders go down. In the heart of Pomona’s quaint downtown, the nano-brewery started as a Kickstarter baby but has grown into a formidable member of the Los Angeles beer scene. While it’s one of the most family-friendly breweries in the area, if you need some purely adult fare, Brouwerij West is also a live music venue that frequently caters to local artists and the 21+ only crowd.

(Not a bad way to begin.) While the Belgians are fantastic, especially the triple with hibiscus, you should also opt for one of the IPAs or a sampler of four beers. Head to these breweries for a taste of what's on tap across Los Angeles. The Green Farmer Pale Ale is a rotating series featuring 100% Maryland grown ingredients.

Luckily, the bartenders are also highly knowledgeable about Monkish’s many bottle, can, and tap offerings and, frankly, the brewery is killing it on social media. Additional ice cream shops can be added to the Ice Cream Trail at any time by contacting Visit Luzerne County. MacLeod is a standard-bearer for the San Fernando Valley beer scene and opened in Highland Park in October 2022. The place specializes in traditional English styles and has continued to push boundaries with its food (including a big pizza focus) over the past few years, as well.

Some of the great beer-drinking spots on this list actually make their own beer, while others simply sell it in taprooms — while offering a seat at a popular community hub. Here now are 19 places to enjoy excellent craft beer in Los Angeles right now. Round up a group of friends and head to Arts District Brewing Company stat. More than just a brewery, this place is the ultimate hangout and party spot, complete with Skee-Ball, darts, ping pong, a full cocktail bar and fantastic food. If you’re new to their beer menu, you’d be wise to order a flight and get a taste of everything they have to offer.

The semi-hidden corner location also now welcomes a variety of food pop-ups. While not exactly located right along the beach, this Santa Monica staple still feels like a seaside hangout thanks to cool coastal breezes and a bright collection of beers made for easy drinking. Better still, the brewery is also now home to New York City’s Emmy Squared, one of the country’s most well-known craft pizza operations. Barely open a year, Malibu Brewing Company operates as a taproom and restaurant. There’s charm in every corner plus killer views with indoor and outdoor seating on a dog-friendly patio. Try one of the 20 beers on tap with wings, nachos, flatbreads, charcuterie boards, or the beer-braised short ribs over mac and cheese.
